New Balance is the synonym of comfort and performance. Based in 1906 in Boston Massachusetts, by an Irish immigrant William J. Riley, New Balance was initially an enterprise producing arch supports for workers. Rumor has it that Riley designed his special arch supports while watching chickens walking around the backyard. He was amazed by how they perfectly balanced on their three-pronged feet. So, that was the crucial point that made New Balance stand out from the crowd: A flexible arch support system consisting of three support points.
In 1934, Arthur Hall becomes the partner of New Balance Arch Support Company, and his daughter Eleanor together with her husband Paul Kidd initially own the business in 1956. Since 1960 the company designs sports shoes for athletes. In 1961, New Balance produces the first running sneakers, the Trackster with ripple sole for high traction. New Balance running shoes were soon acknowledged by colleges and universities in Massachusetts as track shoes. The brand’s growing popularity caused the company to be owned by Jim Davis in 1972, who turned New Balance into one of the most popular sneaker brands in the world. From then on, New Balance started using numbers acquired “N” as a logo in 1976, with the release of the iconic 320 model.
